In 1444, Novgorod was making inroads against German trade interests in Livonia. In EU4 terms, Livonia is basically a march. If this happened in EU4 we'd call it vassal feeding. The German Order turned around and gave the land to the Sword Brethren. Denmark, unable to do anything about it, ultimately sold the land (at a fairly high price) to the German Order. The German Order stepped in, crushed the revolt, and then wasn't terribly inclined to let the territory go. Denmark was not in a position to crush the revolt, seeing as how the death of Christopher II almost dissolved the entire state. Danish Estonia, for a variety of reasons, rose in revolt against the Danish crown. The issue flared up again in the 14th century. Danish Estonia was, in the 13th century, the reason the Sword Brethren were forced to join the German Order (they lost a battle to the Danes and they lost badly). Nowhere is this more clear than in the case of Danish Estonia. especially those that involved interacting with other states. Livonia managed its own affairs, yes, but it was the German Order that managed many of their affairs. Wiki says they were autonomous but it doesn't quite portray the story effectively. The Sword Brethren of Livonia were part of the German Order. If there's interest, I'll provide some suggestions for the Teutonic Knights/German Order and the Knights of Saint John (or just "The Knights" in EU4). Since doing them credit will require a fair amount of text, I've decided to do them separately. The Monastic Orders IG are in serious need of some love. Subtitled: "RIP in Pepperoni, Square Memel"
